Cache and user ratings

    Hi Brian, I have a few questions. I had 8 minisites and my website performance was atrocious. I have disabled 4 minisites and installed w3 total cache. Using your settings from the forum the performance has improved significantly. Just to give you an idea, my ttfb was anywhere between 8 - 12 seconds. However, user ratings for logged out individuals do not work. They can submit multiple ratings and even when they successfully submit ratings the rating does not show on the post loop where the posts are shown in a grid on the mini site. You can see for your self if you like. I followed the instructions seen here: http://industrialthemes.ticksy.com/faq/1604 and added the following urls: /battlefield/.+ /dayz/.+ /call-duty/.+ /minecraft/.+ /league-legends/.+ /dota/.+ /sports/.+ /mixed/.+ Can you please let me know what else I need to do as the caching is creating problems for non-logged users. Also on a side note. I had a lot of problems with Userpro conflicting with the theme. The author of that plugin was fantastic in removing all conflicts. Did you want me to attach the file of his modifications for future theme release considerations?
  • Salih replied

    Sorry about the formatting there just saw it :( I also forgot to add that somtimes the combined rating fromt he different categories = 0 really strange

    Brian replied

    After you add those to your settings in w3 total cache you should empty all caches within w3 total cache. Also go into theme options >> advanced and check and make sure unlimited user ratings aren't turned on.

    Sure, I'd love to see how to make Flavor more compatible with userpro - please share!

  • Salih replied

    I will send it later today. I'm at work right now, but I will send it when I finish for the day.

    Yes, I have empited all the cache and it's not working at all. If you go to this link you will see that the user rating is 0 (not sure how this is possible) http://www.gamerclips.tv/call-of-duty/black-ops-2-sniper-montage-daybreak-by-req-rinmama/

    This happens quite often with users who are not logged in. Also when you rate the video, the scores are accepted and then it's just reset.

    I dont' really have an an option to turn off caching as the ttfb is about 15 seconds. I'm having real performance issues. I had 8 minisites and brought it back to 4.

    Is there anyway to enhance the performance of the theme? For me it's pretty unusable right now.

    Let me know if you need backend access I can provide you with a password so you can see what's going on here.

    So if it only happens for non-logged in users than that probably does point to a caching issue. In your w3 total cache settings do you have it setup so logged in users don't see cached pages?

  • Salih replied

    Yes I do. It works fine for logged users. The problem exists with people who are not logged in.

  • Salih replied

    Is it possible for you to log in and please look at this? Basically any logged out individuals have massive problems.

  •  326
    Brian replied

    I just accessed your site as a non-logged-in user and rated this post: http://www.gamerclips.tv/battlefield/beautiful-battlefield-4-unbelievable-kills-and-scenery-montage-original-mix-hd/

    After rating each of the 3 criteria, I then refreshed the page and it retained the checkmarks stating I rated it, did not let me rate it again, and increased from 4 ratings to 5 ratings. Is this one of the posts that you were having trouble with? I mean, I know you were saying it was ALL posts, but perhaps I accessed one that is different somehow...?

  • Salih replied

    No it's still very random. I entered in a rating 3 times on one video until it accepted. On this one http://www.gamerclips.tv/league-of-legends/arctic-ops-varus-skin-spotlight-league-of-legends/ I attmpted 5 times and yes all scores were ticked and then it says "you have rated this" etc. However when I refresh page or go to the minisite, the rating is not recorded.

    So yes I am seeing this across most posts. The exceptions put in place on the caching do not seem to be working properly. I'll do a screen cap when I am home later today and you can see for your self. It's starting to get a little frustrating :(

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Let's try to deduce whether or not in fact it is the caching so we know for sure. Please completely disable the caching plugin (empty your caches first) and then tell me if you ever experience it not saving the ratings.

  • Salih replied

    Yeah, turned off the cache and the ratings were working fine for non-logged in useres. Turned it back on and ratings were not registereing on page refresh I could basically vote again. However, when I look at it from the admin side as a logged in user I can see that the rating has in fact been recorded.

    Are you able to look at my exceptions and make sure that's fine? I mean I followed instructions perfectly but for what ever reason this is not working.

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Yeah that makes total sense - it's actually adding the value but the cached view is displaying for the user again rather than the updated view upon page refresh. So it looks like it could have something to do with your cache settings then. Here's something I noticed - and I haven't checked other places but this is just the first thing I happened to notice - for instance this post from the call of duty minisite: http://www.gamerclips.tv/call-of-duty/pushing-it-to-the-kem-20-22-call-of-duty-ghosts-ps4-infected-k-e-m-strike-gameplay/ in the URL you see the minisite is "call-of-duty" but I noticed in your cache settings in your OP was "call-duty" which wouldn't end up applying to any of the articles/permalinks from the actual call-of-duty minisite - try changing that and then make sure the other ones as well are also matching what the URL actually is when you view the minisite.

    One other thing that just popped into mind - have you rebuild your permalinks in a while? Try going to Settings >> Permalinks and clicking Save which will rebuild your permalinks and might have an effect (man I really want to play call of duty after watching that video...)

  • Salih replied

    Yeah thanks for picking that up! I think that was probably it. I think that's Yoast Seo doing it's thing. I might just turn that off to avoid any future problems.

    How long do the side widgets typically take to update? The top clips of the month and some of the trending reviewed articles? What triggerst hem to appear there? I guess I'm having most issues around the user reviewed and trending. Not sure it makes sense to me as it isn't really instantaneous.

    Brian, also is there anyway to make the theme more efficient? For me it's the bulk of my download time at around 3.5 seconds. From your experience which aspects are most resource intensive and what should I look to turn off first?

    Btw....COD :( disappointed....I'm more of a BF guy :)

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Definitely the most resource intensive is the minisite functionality. Each minisite is a new Custom Post Type with tons of options and features that get created. It doesn't matter how many articles or reviews are within each minisite. For instance, having 10 minisites with 1 article would make your site MUCH slower than having 1 minisite with 1,000 articles. So having a fast server and also minimizing the number of minisites you have helps. Also when the theme makes calls to third-party vendors to grab social media stuff like pinterest, flickr, facebook, etc. can potentially have an impact just because the number of data transferring from third-parties.

    The widget should update immediately as long as the cache is reset, which I believe with w3 Total Cache happens whenever an admin or logged-in users views a page. That's a good question though as far as widgets go, I guess I don't know for sure. Obviously with caching turned off they would update immediately...

  • Salih replied

    Yeah. I get the same load time when I disable 4 out of 8 minisites or have them on. It's pretty appaling acuatlly up to 9 second load time and worse.

    http://www.webpagetest.org/result/140307_Z3_1304/

    This isn't really working out for me. I've had the serve optimized, I've had other people look at it. All they keep coming back to is the theme and there's nothing I can do about it.

    Don't get me wrong, I love it. It's just not useable :(

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Unfortunately I'm not really sure what more we can actually do to increase page speed. I suppose it's really a case of the theme having possibly a trade-off of functionality and features for speed, at least in your specific case. If I can swap out Flavor for another one of my themes for you I'd gladly do it for no charge. For instance my newest theme Explicit has an entirely rewritten framework and would probably be faster than Flavor. Maybe you've already looked at it and are not interested, but I just thought I'd offer that - I hate to leave you high and dry...

  • Salih replied

    Man at this point I am willing to try anything. So if explicit will work I would really love to give it a try! I might just need some assistance around customising certain things like having only user reviews, having the review rating come under the body of the post etc.

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Sure no problem, most of that you can do with Explicit. Keep in mind it doesn't come with minisite functionality because it attempts to move towards standard WordPress categories instead (for performance reasons) so you can still do colors/icons specific to the various "sections" of your site. What's your email address? I'll send you the theme.

    Brian replied

    Correct, it's all completely based on categories now. Sent.

  • Salih replied

    Hi Brian,

    Thanks for sending this through, the performance on this template is much much better. I do have a couple of questions.

    1. How do I achieve custom backgrounds for posts belonging to specific categories. I was able to set different backgrounds for different categories, but they never extended to the posts within those categories. Here is the code I used for home and my category:

    body.home{
        background-image: url('http://gamerclips.tv/gclips/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/grunge_background.jpg');
    background-repeat: no-repeat;
    background-attachment: fixed;
    background-size: cover;
    }
    body.category-battlefield{
        background-image: url('http://gamerclips.tv/gclips/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/bfwall.jpg');
    background-repeat: no-repeat;
    background-attachment: fixed;
    background-size: cover;
    }

    2. If there anyway to set up an automatic template for posts? My users submit video urls from the front end and I need the post to be uniform across all submissions. That is they need to have user ratings only. I have selected the review as the default post type, but the problem is I have to manually go in and select "no author reviews, user ratings only" for it to show up. How do I go about setting this up so it shows up automatically?

    3. I'm also seeing this error (image attached).

    4. Finally do the page builder elements have short codes, There are places where I want to put in seperators etc.

    Cheers mate, really appreciate your help with this!

  •  326
    Brian replied

    1) This is something I have on the docket for version 1.3 of the theme. I just released version 1.2 which lets you do custom logos for categories, but I haven't added in background image yet (not sure what the code would be, I need to write it first...)

    2) Not sure exactly, where are you selecting user ratings only - is that in the main theme options?

    3) Did you load the demo content and then go in and change the names or slugs of the awards? If so, delete those and just create your own awards and that error should disappear.

    4) Unfortunately no, there are not shortcodes available currently for the page builders, that's a good idea to add into a future theme update.

    If you want version 1.2 let me know and I'll send it to you.

  • Salih replied

    1. Valenti does a great job at this if you were looking at themes that do this.

    2. This in the edit post options for the individual post. At the bottom there are a number of drop down list for my category where I. An assign a score. If I do not the user rating does not come up.

    btw happy to receive 1,2 but will I not be able to download it like everyone else once it's up?

  • Salih replied

    Sort also forgot to mention that this id a fresh install and no demo content was loaded in relation to that error on the screenshot

  •  326
    Brian replied

    For the second issue you should choose "allow users to rate this" and then users will be able to rate without requiring an editor rating. Sorry if I'm misunderstanding what you're saying here. I just sent you 1.2 in an email.

  • Salih replied

    Yes, but is there some sort of custom CSS that I can include so that this comes up automatically? I need this to happen as users are submitting posts from the front end and so they do not have access to enable those options?

    Issue 1 was solved by adding badges and awards.

    Thanks Brian,

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Oh I see, you want that to be the default. Are you using editor ratings at all throughout your site, or are you only using user ratings? Might have an idea depending on that...

  • Salih replied

    Editor ratings are turned off across the site

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Oh - that was going to be my suggestion - to use the theme options to turn off editor ratings. So what you're saying is they are already turned off completely but when your users post from the front end the articles are not rateable by users?

  • Salih replied

    Yeah that's right Brian. The editor ratings are hidden and disabled across the site. The default post type is review instead of article, and the reviews are not showing. I think the issue is that you have to select those option within the individual post options at the bottom from admin i.e. allow users to rate this.

  •  326
    Brian replied

    So basically is there a way to set default custom field values for the front-end submission process? That way you could set your rating criteria to all match the "allow users to rate" value for each of the matching rating criteria custom fields... are you using Gravity Forms, and if so does it permit default custom field values?

  • Salih replied

    Yep that's correct! They allow custom post fields but I'm not sure where to start. I found this and from what I read it maybe allows for what you asked http://www.gravityhelp.com/documentation/page/Post_Custom_Field

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Create one for each of your rating criteria and set the value to "user". Keep in mind the naming conventions for rating criteria, which is all spaces replaced with underscores, an underscore at the front of the rating, and all lowercase (and no special characters). So for instance here's the custom field name and value if you had three rating criteria called "First Criteria", "Second Criteria", and "Third Criteria":

    _first_criteria = user

    _second_criteria = user

    _third_criteria = user

  • Salih replied

    Cheers Brian! That did the trick, works beautifully! There is one issue however, because the "review" option is not endorsed under post type. The posts are not being coming up in the 'top rated' filter option. What would I need to enter into gravity forms to endorse this option so that the posts are ranked?

    Could you let me know what the custom field names are for the background image as well as the rating metric? It will just help me set custom background images for different categories for the time being.

    Also if you have a moment could you please go to my homepage www.gamerclips.tv/gclips/ and see my widget 'headers' how do I apply color to these as they are pale grey and I believe I can't see the icons that are contained within them. For example for the trending and top reviewed.

    On the homepage I like how the award is listed bove the description. The badges are below. Just checking that this is correct as well?

  •  326
    Brian replied

    There's a function that runs after the post is saved that tallies the rating criteria and updates the total rating field which is what powers the widgets and top reviewed sorting throughout the site. Check it out in functions/admin/metaboxes-generator.php in the save() function beginning on line 61. Somehow that function is going to have to be called when the review is submitted/saved.

    Background image is _bg_image

    Rating metric is _rating_metric

    Strange, they are supposed to be that light grey background with dark icons, but for some reason yours are white - did you make some sort of change to the code, CSS, or color pickers? Actually scratch that, looks like it's because of one of the color selections in your color pickers in the theme options (which means it's a slight theme bug) and to find out for sure please try adding this to your cutsom CSS theme option:

    .widgets .header-icon {color: #BFBFCB !important}

    Please let me know either way if that does or doesn't work. And yes, I can confirm the badges display in a different place than the awards by design - it's not just you :)

  • Salih replied

    Thanks Brianm

    I added the custom code. Very strange that the "Top weekly clips" icon is dark grey however the "trending" icon in the widgets is still not visible due to the color clash.

    You're right, I need to go in and update the post for any ratings to be taken into account in terms of the ranking. Do you have any times on how this could be achieved?

    This is kind of the main feature of my site and if ratings aren't working, I'm in a bit of trouble :(

  •  326
    Brian replied

    You should check out this new service I was just made aware of to help you with customizations on your site: https://www.elto.com/

  • Salih replied

    Yeah that looks good, but I've already spent too much money here with all the other experts I had to help me with Flavor. I'll see if someone can assist me with it. Thanks anyway. One last thing since everything else is working alright. How do I enable the social icons at the top right? They're not showing up and I haven't really disabled them.

    Also any explanation why the bottom icon for trending is not appearing....is this a known bug?

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Two steps: first make sure in theme options >> general settings >> sticky bar & header you don't have the "disable social badges" ticked. Then go to theme options >> social >> social badges and add in your social badges there and they should display. Let me know if they are not.

    For the trending icon, I tried to view your site to see this happening but it's still the Flavor theme - what was the URL to your staging site with Explicit again? Sorry if I'm missing it...

  • Salih replied

    All good Brian. It was number 2 that I did not complete. My bad. Here is the address. gamerclips.tv/gclips/

    I also found a bug for you. If you enter in no spaces in an excerpt so for example DescriptionDescriptionDescriptionDescriptionDescriptionDescriptionDescriptionDescriptionDescription it breaks ina  straight line outside of the text area and goes across the page. Not that anyone will type like this, but if someone inserts a link into an excerpt for what ever reason, it might break their page.

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Oh good thanks for letting me know - I'll add that to the list to fix in version 1.3, thanks!

  • Salih replied

    Great, the only other small bug and I assume it' s because I have disabled icons in the megamenu is the fact that once a category is selected the text jumps up and it is not in line. The other bug is that the filter icons do not show in IE 9+. Is this the right place to be reporting bugs or do you have another form I shoudl be using?

    I fixed the trending icon not showing in the right colour in case other had the same issue. I used this CSS code based on what you provided:

    .widgets .theme-icon-trending {color: #BFBFCB !important}

    "There's a function that runs after the post is saved that tallies the rating criteria and updates the total rating field which is what powers the widgets and top reviewed sorting throughout the site. Check it out in functions/admin/metaboxes-generator.php in the save() function beginning on line 61. Somehow that function is going to have to be called when the review is submitted/saved."

    I still don't get this. Shouldn't this be updated continuously once another user rates the content after it has been posted? I'm having trouble accessing it as I don't have a Mac and it's not allowing me to open the file.

    Also if I wanted to re-link the existing login and account/register icons to my plugin or custom registration page where would I go to look for that?

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Thanks I'll add the text jumping to the list of future theme updates.

    Are you sure it's IE9+ or only IE9? I've seen this in IE9 but in IE10 and IE11 it should be working - is this not the case for your install?

    Yes it updates after users rate, but initially the value needs to be set when the post is created for the editor rating to be totalled. For the user ratings that is updated automatically via AJAX, but I didn't think that was what we were talking about.

    What do you need a Mac specifically to open? Nothing within the theme files should require a specific OS to view...

    To change links of login/register links do so in inc/sticky.php lines 92 and 103 and set the href links there to what you want them to point to.

  • Salih replied

    Yeah I'm not talking about editor ratings at all. Sorry about the confusion. I just don't get why When a user rating is submitted the post rating does not count. I manually have to update the post for the clip for the user votes to count and for the post to show up in any of the rating lists (top 10 filtered by user ratings etc)

    no editor ratings are entered at any point nor do I need them for this site.

  • Salih replied

    Hi Brian I just tested this by rating over my mobile phone and when I rate posts over my phone the issues noted above do not exist...now I'm even more confused :s

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Sorry my response was a little confusing, I meant initially the value needs to be set when the post is created for the user rating to be totalled. Have you looked into hiring a developer to help you with these custom theme mods yet?

  • Salih replied

    Everything is working pretty well, I'm happy to update posts manually for the time being. There is this however, if you look at the URL here I'm not sure why these are being ranked in a weird way http://gamerclips.tv/topclips/. The unrated items are pushed randomly amongst the rated clips. Is this because there isn't enough posts? Once I change the filter and click on something else it does re-rank them appropriately and the blank ones do not appear where they shouldn't.

    Also sometimes in the paged post display variant, the posts overlap each other. I have attached an image for you to see. I have excerpts for all of these.

    These two look like a bugs so yeah not sure, thought I'd send it through to you.

  •  326
    Brian replied

    You're definitely onto something there - looks like a possible theme bug. Can I have you try out a mod to see if it changes anything? Edit the inc/directory.php file and locate this code from lines 131 - 134:

    case 'users':
    	$args['orderby'] = 'meta_value_num';
    	$args['meta_key'] = IT_META_TOTAL_USER_SCORE_NORMALIZED;
    	break;

    Please try changing that to this and see if it begins omitting the non-rated articles from the list correctly without you having to click on the sort buttons at the top:

    case 'users':
    	$args['orderby'] = 'meta_value_num';
    	$args['meta_key'] = IT_META_TOTAL_USER_SCORE_NORMALIZED;
    	$args['meta_query'] = array(array( 'key' => IT_META_DISABLE_REVIEW, 'value' => 'true', 'compare' => '!=' ), array( 'key' => IT_META_TOTAL_USER_SCORE_NORMALIZED, 'value' => '0', 'compare' => 'NOT IN'));
    	break;

    As for the overlapping, I believe that might be due to some sort of javascript conflict. Does this happen with all plugins completely disabled?

  • Salih replied

    Hey Brian, I did just try that code and it didn't really work. I can always check in the theme options, do not display reviews with no scores.

  • Salih replied

    I have tried disabling plugins and the overlap issue is still there. I have posted in Jeffreys support thread so maybe you can help both of us.

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Sure we'll continue there. I just realized I asked you redundantly if you tried with no plugins available there - so disregard that if you read it before I can update it - heading over there now...

  • Salih replied

    Sorry Brian,

    I wanted to know that in the future release could you enable the search to also include tags in the search?

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Good idea, not exactly sure what would be involved for that but I'll look into it. Have you by chance looked to see if there is a WordPress plugin that adds this in automatically? I imagine any plugin that add this in for WordPress would work with Flavor.

  • Salih replied

    I'm using Explicit now. I'll look into it and let you know.

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Thanks.

  • Salih replied

    Hi Brian, our site has actually taken off in the last week an we're getting like 3.5k page views a day now with a small user base. This will grow again we've only been up for a week. Everyone loves the design and thinks the website is amazing so thank you!!! Here's an issue we spoke about earlier with the posts not tallying up and saving the scores to go into the ranking widets. You said two weeks ago:

    There's a function that runs after the post is saved that tallies the rating criteria and updates the total rating field which is what powers the widgets and top reviewed sorting throughout the site. Check it out in functions/admin/metaboxes-generator.php in the save() function beginning on line 61. Somehow that function is going to have to be called when the review is submitted/saved.

    Now I'm not 100% why this is not occuring for my site. I'm using graviity forms, could it be because the submit form is modal and sends the user bakc to the homepage that the submission does not have enough time to tally all the additional code? I checked out the code you asked to look at.

    function save( $post_id ) {
    		# check autosave
    		if ( defined( 'DOING_AUTOSAVE' ) && DOING_AUTOSAVE ) {
    			return $post_id;
    		}

    		if( empty( $_POST[$this->_meta_box['id'] . '_meta_box_nonce'] ) )
    			return $post_id;

    		# verify nonce
    		if ( !wp_verify_nonce( $_POST[$this->_meta_box['id'] . '_meta_box_nonce'], basename(__FILE__) ) ) {
    			return $post_id;
    		}

    		# check permissions
    		if ( 'page' == $_POST['post_type'] ) {
    			if ( !current_user_can( 'edit_page', $post_id ) ) {
    				return $post_id;
    			}
    		} elseif ( !current_user_can( 'edit_post', $post_id ) ) {
    			return $post_id;
    		}

    		# save the meta boxes
    		foreach ( $this->_meta_box['fields'] as $value ) {
    			$name = $value['id'];

    			$old = get_post_meta( $post_id, $name, true );

    			$new = ( !empty( $_POST[IT_SETTINGS][$value['id']] ) )
    			? $_POST[IT_SETTINGS][$value['id']]
    			: '';

    			if(is_array($new)) $new = serialize($new);

    			if ( $new && $new != $old ) {
    				update_post_meta( $post_id, $name, $new );
    			} elseif ('' == $new && $old) {
    				delete_post_meta( $post_id, $name, $old );
    			}
    		}

    		# save the total rating

    		# letter/number equivalents

    I'm just not sure why this is happening. I really need help with this and would be glad to give you backend access. I know you already said that you can't help, I need someone who can and going on microlancer will be a waste of time as you know this theme best.

    Happy for this to be used as howcase site people are loving it!

    Cheers mate

    Brian replied

    Wow so glad you're having such success with the site, and it's extremely flattering that peopl elove the design!

    Really I think the issue is just that the WordPress save function is perhaps not getting run when the post is submitted. That is a WordPress native function, not a theme function - the theme merely ties into it and performs a tally and total calculation and then inserts it into the post's custom meta field. I don't know why that's not happening when an article is submitted via Gravity Forms. But I believe as long as the save function runs, the theme score should do its thing, so I'm not thinking it's so much theme-related as the way GF works for some reason. I'm not an expert in the plugin and I don't know the intricacies of it, so I definitely recommend grabbing a developer who could knock this out for you. Obviously I'd love it to be me, if only there were two of me so I had even 1 extra second in my schedule... :(

  • Salih replied

    No problems Brian, completely understand. Gravity forms came back to me and said that they use the same core publishing process as wordpress and that it's a theme error. I feel like a tennis ball :)

    I'm getting a 404 on the /gclips/wp-content/themes/explicit/js for the masterslider .mp

    http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=5vocpu&s=8

    How do I fix this?

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Yeah I get the same thing - I'm looking into why that is. I haven't noticed it actually affecting anything performance or funcitonality wise on my site, but at least you know it's not just you...

  • Salih replied

    Ok cool. Let's hope it's not too hard to fix as you can see it's adding considerably to my load time.

    I did read a little bit about the WT3 caching tool. Is it possible to have the views counts, likes and voting remain dynamic while enforcing cache for performance? So far I've tried but had no luck.

    The reason I ask is because I'm starting to get performance issues :( The response time on my server is between 3 - 4 seconds while everythign loads in an aditional 4 - 5 seconds. I'm on a VPS adn the hosting providers keep telling me it's the theme. To be honest I've had enough of their excuses!

    What would you suggest turning off/on to improve performance as the response times are killing me! And do you have a similar experience. Just to give you background in a week we've had 400 posts created and this will only increase exponentially if we continue to grow the way we are. (updating those posts manullay is starting to suck big time hehe :()

  •  326
    Brian replied

    I'm not currently aware of how to get the views/likes working with caching - it's definitely something on the list to look into when I can.

    I'm actually not getting the masterslider.mp issue anymore on my site - I had seen that once or twice in the past but I think it was a temporary thing - are you still getting this? Do you indeed have the Hero slider set to display on the page where that error is appearing?

    The theme is pretty fast, I'm not sure why they're telling you that. Do they back up that claim with anything to do with the theme? I have never experienced any performance issues with Explicit, and I think if you are running into any kind of resource limits it would mainly be due to the combination of the amount of content you are serving with the amount of page views you have I suppose. There shouldn't be any CPU issues or anything like that.

    The number of posts you have within the theme shouldn't affect speed by the way...

  • Salih replied

    Yeah, it's just really annoying! I'll look into duping the site on another hosting provider and see what that's like.

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Please let me  know the results. Honestly I'm pretty sure any performance related issues were nipped in the bud with Explicit - I specifically rewrote the framework with performance in mind so unlike some of my previous more resource-intensive themes (Flavor and Steam) this one should be much more spry.

  • Salih replied

    Yeah cool definitely will! btw just wanted to ask you, I have a page with infinite blog on it. The button to load more is not showing, neither does it show for paged blog either!

    I just noticed this check it out here. Not sure why this is happening as it's not disabled in the theme options.

    http://gamerclips.tv/blog/

  •  326
    Brian replied

    That's a new one. Does it only happen on category archive pages? Have you tried adding an infinite grid/blog to the front page or in any of the other page builders?

  • Salih replied

    The infinite grid and paged grid work on the front page no problems. I'm only having issues with the infinite blog and paged blog. Could it be because I have a sidebar on that page?

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Let me clarify: so you can't get either of the blog layouts to show the pagination or load more on any pages on your site - or only the blog page?

  • Salih replied

    So yeah, it's a regular page and I've used the builder to include the blog. For what ever reasons I cannot see those features :(

  •  326
    Brian replied

    But... what I was asking was this is happening on all pages on your site? I understand you created a page and added these builder panels, but what about adding them to your front page, or a single page, or a category archive page for instance? I'm trying to isolate if the error comes from the builder panels themselves, or just something to do with how they are placed within the theme options...

  • Salih replied

    Sure. On the front page it works fine. I also tested infinite grid and paged grid (from the front page) and it did not work on a page. There are no issues on the single posts, it functions properly just as the front page. The only place it's not working is the pages.

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Awesome, thanks for the information, I'll throw this on the list to test for the next update!

  • Salih replied

    Ok I have also potentially discovered another bug so I'm not sure if this is something to do with my set up or a theme function. So I change the "Week starts" option in General settings for wordpress to be Sunday as it suits my contests and give aways.

    As soon as Monday rolls around it's as if the theme has a forced detection for the filters and top ranked widgets to restart on a Monday. They know longer show any content from the Sunday and just say "try another filter"

    I have to jump in under general settings and change the week to start on a Monday to fix this and so it starts showing content from Monday onwards. Hope this made sense :s

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Wow I was never even aware WordPress had a "week starts" option. What specific parts of the theme don't work as expected?

  • Salih replied

    Hey Brian yeah it's under general settings....it impacts all of the ranking widgets on site and tending widgets which are set to weekly. The monthly widgets are unaffected it seems.

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Oh I see so it only affects areas that have a time frame selector that is set to weekly. Thanks for that information, I'll play with the settings for a future theme update.

  • Salih replied

    No problems man thought I'd let you know :)

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Yeah that's definitely news to me so I appreciate it as always!

  • Salih replied

    Btw Brian we just switched hosts and now the TOP 10 of ALL TIME on the front page keep showing the same videos on all the different filers (e.g. viewed, liked, rated, and commented)

    http://gamerclips.tv/

    Any idea why this might be happening?

  • Salih replied

    Here's info from the error log:

    Brian replied

    That specific error line of code points to the mega menu drop downs - have a look at your menus and just make sure everything looks like it's setup correctly. Strange that it would all of a sudden stop working just from switching hosts...

  •   Salih replied privately
  •  326
    Brian replied

    I just logged in and couldn't really see anything specifically wrong, then I checked the top 10 filters clicking through each one and they did in fact seem to change the videos - are you seeing that at all? I think the first 1 (and maybe 2 or 3?) stayed the same but I can confirm the videos were actually changing at least for some of the slots...

  • Salih replied

    Yes they are shifting around but they are completely wrong and different to before the move. I know we have videos that have more likes eg the surgeon on yet the berezino video is ranked ahead of it. Same with the comments there's videos with comments yet it's not actually showing them there. It's just weird.

    I guess what I'm saying is that it's pulling data which does not make sense. So the berezino clip is not the highest rated by far nor does it have the highest number of likes or comments yet it's number one. So something is not right I just can't figure out what :( Everything else seems to be working fine.

    Could it be an issue with where it's pulling the data?

  •  326
    Brian replied

    It looks like it's working correctly with views but not the other filters. I checked on my demo and it appears it's doing the same thing. Adding it to the list to fix for the next update - thanks for catching this! (looks like the top ten widget is working correctly, just not the top ten builder panel, FYI - let me know if you notice the same thing on your end)

  • Salih replied

    Awesome Brian :) Everything else seems to be working fine though. Here's another observation I have made. When someone tries to add soundcould as this user has it has issues:

    http://gamerclips.tv/%E2%98%85-mini-games-%E2%98%85-lets-play-tnt-run-%E2%98%85mattplayz-%E2%98%85/

    Also can I ask you, beause I am using UserPro for them to enter social profiles and they need to input the complete link in the "About this Author" box it comes up with double the http://twitter.com/http://twitter.com/username You'll see if you click on it. Is there any code I can use or any part of the code I can change for that not to happen when it is being shown on your theme?

    Cheers Brian :)

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Try adding this to your Custom CSS theme option:

    .the-content iframe {max-width:100%}

    YOu could try editing line 1903 of the functions/theme.php file:

    $out.='<a class="theme-icon-twitter info" title="'. __( 'Find me on Twitter', IT_TEXTDOMAIN ) .'" href="http://twitter.com/'. get_the_author_meta('twitter', $authorid) .'" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"></a>';

    Try this:

    $out.='<a class="theme-icon-twitter info" title="'. __( 'Find me on Twitter', IT_TEXTDOMAIN ) .'" href="'. get_the_author_meta('twitter', $authorid) .'" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"></a>';

    Brian = king! Worked a treat again man! Thanks so much!!!!

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Glad to help!

  • Salih replied

    Hey Brian, I picked up a small little issue. If you go to this page and click on the social icons below

    http://gamerclips.tv/playstation-4-outselling-xbox-one-sales/

    Because the user, in this case me, has not entered in "http://www.twitter.com/username" but instead typed "www.twitter.com/username" for some weird reason it's giving a link to the website.

    Do you have any clue why this might be happening?

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Yes, that is what the browser does when you don't put a full URL in. All URLs have to start with the protocol (i.e. "http://") or else the browser thinks you're linking to an internal (relative) link within your site.

  • Salih replied

    Yeah I suppose :) Hey Brian just a question I'm curious about. Is there anyway to see how many views every single post on the site has had? Would be really interesting to see how many views the site has generated overall.

    Also is this kept somewhere in case I wanted to showcase how many views each user has gotten in relation to the posts they've made ?

  •  326
    Brian replied

    You can use Google Analytics (what I use) to see views for yourself, but as for integrating them into your site that would definitely require some custom theme modification.

  • Salih replied

    Yep completely understand Brian...thanks for your response. I will def be looking for someone to develop that for me. I guess I was just hoping you could tell me where the view counts are stored at all or is that part of the core?

  •  326
    Brian replied

    I'm always happy to help you find code within the theme! If memory serves, you're using Explicit, right? This is the Flavor support center so I don't want to give you the wrong location - so just wanted to make sure which theme you're talking about...

  • Salih replied

    Hey Brian, yeah I'm on Explicit now and soon I will purchase the theme due to the amount of support you have given!

  •  326
    Brian replied

    The view counts in Explicit use the variable on line 41 of the framework.php file:

    define( 'IT_META_TOTAL_VIEWS', '_total_views');

    And the function that stores the view is in functions/core.php beginning on line 675: it_user_view()

  • Salih replied

    Awesome Brian! Thanks very much. I'm working with someone who will hopefully develop some custom functionality for me. So I might have to come back to you with a couple more questions.

    The only other thing I wanted to ask is whether anyone has requested badges to show up in the portholes and hero slider? I know iwth the portholes thre might be a space issue. What are your thoughts on that?

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Haven't had that request yet. I had thought about adding that in originally but decided it might look to busy. I'll add it as an option possibly in a future update, thanks for the suggestion.

  • Salih replied

    Yeah I can see how it would be hard to manage that. Maybe you could restrict it to 3 badges at most or something. The other I question I had and I"m not sure whether this is a problem with the WP core. Is it possible to make the comment section only refresh when someone makes a comment alone or is that kind of impossible?

  •  326
    Brian replied

    It's not impossible... if you know code. Would just take some custom theme modifications to accomplish this - sort of "ajaxify" the comments...

  • Screencredits replied

    Hi Salih,

    I noticed early in this thread (March1) that you mentioned having a file of modifications to integrate UserPro with Flavor without conflicts.

    Would you still have that file by any chance? I installed UserPro a few days ago and am having a couple of issues.

    Thanks,

    - Jason

  • Salih replied

    Ok Brian, that sounds like it's a bit of work, but I'd like to throw that in as  a suggestion if at all possible for future feature considerations. Cheers :)

    So if I were to integrate something like this. An already existing plugin it wouldn't count the comments I suppose?

    http://codecanyon.net/item/commentator-wordpress-plugin/6425752?WT.ac=search_item&WT.seg_1=search_item&WT.z_author=yukulelix

    Sorry Jason, I moved over to Explicit due to performance issues. I might still have something but it will be older versions. Maybe some custom css and a recoded old version of Flavor. Did you still want that? How do I get it to you?

  • Salih replied

    Jason I just looked through some of my support and  found this :) Please read this here: http://userproplugin.com/userpro/forums/topic/setup-plugin-and-modify-css-or-what-ever-else-so-that-the-plugin-and-theme-work/

    Read to the end because the code does change a bit. Hope this helps you :)

  • Salih replied

    Hi Brian, I just wanted to report this issue. It might have something to do with the CSS code of stretchign content in the body to 100%. Unfortunately the search page. It's not playing nice there. Check it out:

    http://gamerclips.tv/?s=epic+fail

  • Screencredits replied

    Thank you, Salih.

  •  326
    Brian replied

    It's something to do with the post attached because every time I click a different sorting filter it always breaks on the page immediately after that post - check the excerpt/title and make sure everything looks ok for that post in your dashboard.

  • Salih replied

    Hey Brian,

    I get the same here. http://gamerclips.tv/?s=custom+badge Not sure what's going on. Could it be that I have an excerpt limit of 200 words through Gravity Forms? It's just weird I've nver seen this before.

  • Salih replied

    What's really interesting when searching that same clip is that the same issue doesn't come up http://gamerclips.tv/?s=crouching

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Very strange, I really believe it's an issue with your content. What it looks like to me is that there is an unclosed div tag somewhere in either an excerpt or your content - you should double check your excerpts and content to make sure none of your posts start with a div that then is not closed due to the excerpt length.

  • Salih replied

    Yeah not sure about that as I do not upload any content...will check with some sort of online tool to see if there are any unclosed div tags

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Yeah there's definitely something pertaining to html syntax that is causing this - I don't believe it to be a theme issue but rather an issue with how content was entered into the site somewhere.

  • Salih replied

    Hmmm interesting.... I've pasted the HTML validator findings for both of my outstanding issues:

    The infinite blog or paged blog not having any way to progress pages:

    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fgam...

    The issue with the search page elements being out of whack

    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fgam...

    Is anyone else experiencing this?

  •  326
    Brian replied

    You're the only one I know of experiencing this. Maybe you can temporarily unpublish that specific post so it doesn't display on your site front end and see if you can replicate the issue which will help isolate the issue further

  • Salih replied

    How do I even find the post. It happens across many different search terms. I don't really have control over what users put in nor do I use div tags to be honest.

    On the pagination issue...it's been happening for a long time, so no idea what's going on there.

    These aren't major issues, but it would be nice to see them fixed at some point.

    When is the next update coming up? I'd like to purchase the theme so I can get the auto updates :)

  •  326
    Brian replied

    I thought it was always happening on the same post, even on different search queries and pages - as long as it always got to that post when it broke... Look at my screenshot above to see which post I was referring to

    I'm working on the next update, not sure when it will be released yet. If you purchased the theme you would be notified via email whenever there was an update available...

  • Salih replied

    No problems...Please do not forget the recommended post types style to looks something similar to flavor. It would make the pages more aesthetically pleasing and take up less space :)

So the issue that's happening is if I create a post and give it a featured video, then even with the settings set to display the featured video (i.e. not hide the featured video) then the video is still not displaying. Is this what is theoretically supposed to be happening if I were to try this on my end? If not, what specifically is the scenario that should replicate this on my end?

  • Salih replied

    Yes this is correct and selecting show Featured Video instead of images (which I do not want in my grids) actually does not show anything. So not really sure what's going on. I've tried all options and combinations and cannot display the video for what ever reason.

  • Salih replied

    btw Brian I keep forgetting to always mention that I am dealing with Explicit as Flavor didn't work out for me.

  • Salih replied

    Hey Brian I don't want to confuse things further, but I"ve had to turn on cache due to the amount of requests on site etc. so the actual real site is http://gamerclips.tv

    However, turning on cache has cause the top navigation menu to be perpetually minimized. Do others experience this? Is there anyway I can force it not to do that?

    I just tested this on my live demo and the featured video is working correctly, so I think it's something going on with your installation. Here's what I'm seeing for the top navigation:

  • Salih replied

    Hey Brian, yeah I believe it's the way the page was initially cached for what ever reason. It's been resolved I deleted the cache and it was fine.

    The featured video is just bizzare then. No idea why it's not coming up. Any clues as to what it might be? All the settings are appropriate, the video link is inserted in the layout options but it just doesn't appear. The thumbnail shows up fine.

    Is it at all possible for you just to jump in and have a quick look?

    Actually I just thought of something - why don't I try the specific URL you are using? Paste it in here and I'll try the exact URL you are using and see if I can get it working on my end...

  • Salih replied

    Hey Brian, sorry about the late reply. I've tried a different URL each time and none of them work :(

    Brian replied

    I still want to try it though just for the sake of thorough replication (for instance maybe we're copying them out of Youtube from different places...)

  • Salih replied

    Hey Brian, sorry for not getting back to you, but I've killed my test site because I tried to add this gravity forms restriction code to the functions.php file in the theme editor http://gravitywiz.com/better-limit-submission-per-...

    Am I able to make a few requests for consideration...not sure how possible these are but here's some ideas for you:

    1. All possible badges displayed like reactions and then users can vote on the badges like the reactions. Once this hits a certain threshold e.g. minimum of 10 votes or what ever then it is awarded to the video
    2. Recently awarded filter also can display badged posts
    3. Once a user awarded score reaches a certain amount of votes e.g. 10 and is over a certain number like 9 then the post might be auto awarded an award e.g. quality post or what ever the default is set to in the options
    4. On the home page we can select the filter to show, so instead of recent we can select recently awarded to be the default filter. I know this is possible with some other widgets, but not sure if it's a possibility on the paged or infinite scroll grids.

    I'll look to get the links back to you ASAP, also any ideas why the above code might have killed my test site would be great. Thanks Brian, I really have to say that I appreciate your support!

    Great suggestions, definitely will consider them for future possible theme updates and/or future themes that I create.

  • Salih replied

    Hi Brian,

    Thanks for taking that feedback into consideration. I just wanted to check on a few things:

    - Have been able to fix the bug in the TOP 10 section of all time that does not show some of the rated content properly. I brought this up a while ago :) Just wanted to see if you made any head way here. Here's what you said to refresh your memory:

    "It looks like it's working correctly with views but not the other filters. I checked on my demo and it appears it's doing the same thing. Adding it to the list to fix for the next update - thanks for catching this! (looks like the top ten widget is working correctly, just not the top ten builder panel, FYI - let me know if you notice the same thing on your end)"

    7:47 on April 18, 2014

    - I also seem to have hit a hard limit in terms of any more changes to the options I can make on the theme. At the moment if I go over 1110 changes saved the little saving circle that spins around keeps spinning and no more changes can be made. Just wanted to make you aware of this.

    - Btw for the life of me I cannot figure out how to show pagination on top and bottom of the paged grid. http://gamerclips.tv I only see it at the top and it's not that user friendly especially if I'm looking through the clips.

    Also let me know when the next update of Explicit is up and I'll purchase it. You deserve it man! I've had awesome support from you ever since Flavor didn't work out for me!

  • Mick replied

    Hi there,

    Regarding your issue with the theme options not saving, it could be an issue linked to your limit for maximum number of post input variables

    See the FAQ here :

    http://industrialthemes.ticksy.com/faq/1055

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers

    By the way, you did a great job with your website. Looks really nice and clean.

  • Salih replied

    Thanks Mick, just working to the themes strengths! What's yours? I'd love to check it out.

  • Mick replied

    Still in development for now on. Will let you know when it is live.

    Noticed one small thing within your mega menu, when you hover a sub-category, the hover state is white as the background so you cannot read ;-)

    Try this :

    #section-menu .mega-wrapper .term-list a:hover, #section-menu .mega-wrapper .term-list a.active {color:#b81111;}
    Just replace the color with the one you want. (took the red you had below)
    Cheers,
  • Salih replied

    Thanks Mick! Really appreciate you providing that feedback and also help! That's really kind of you. Just waiting on Brian for the pagination issue now, Mick you got any ideas why the pagination does not appear at the bottom of the Paged Grid?

  • Mick replied

    Hi there,

    Try to add this to your custom css :

    .post-grid .pagination-wrapper.mobile {display: block;}

    Should do the trick.

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers

  • Salih replied

    ok got rid of the question mark character and that code worked just fine!!! Thank you!!! I'm having the same issue with my Search Results page: http://gamerclips.tv/?s=crazy as well as Blog page: http://gamerclips.tv/blog/

    How would the code be modified to change this here?

    Using the FAQs didn't allow me to change theme options didn't help. The server is running PHP script 5.33 and adding the setting to 5000 didn't change that. Thank you anyway!

    Hi Brian, I finally got the test site up and running again and to get back to your original query here are the links and the videos used:

    Displays Fine - Video embedded as normal part of body post

    Youtube URL: http://youtu.be/G-W41j4MRa8

    Post link:http://gunnergeeksclan.com/dasda-asdas-dasd/

    Does not display - Featured video

    Youtube URL: http://youtu.be/9CUXPhLx4Oo

    Post linkL http://gunnergeeksclan.com/testing-4/

  • Salih replied

    Hi Brian,

    I have reset the theme to factory defaults and tested this process. It failed to work with the out of box settings as well. Even though the featured video through gravity forms shows in the post once I go to edit it. It does not show at all on the published post.

    This leads me to believe that something is a little wrong here.

    Thank you for your help.

  • Salih replied

    Hi Brian,

    Here's some further information. I tested this with another front end publishing plugin and it turns out the Video will show as a featured video if an accompanying featured image is uploaded as well. Seems a bit strange. I have Video Thumbnails plugin set to pull this automatically, but it seems not to have been working as it was looking for an image. The featured video only displays if a image is posted. You can see the difference in these two posts below.

    Brian replied

    And that is just the theme's built-in featured image and featured video you're talking about, or something coming from a plugin?

  • Salih replied

    The featured image is pulled from automatically by the plugin from youtube. However, that is not the issue. Even when I post the link manually into the theme it is not showing. It needs to have a featured image to show all together.

  •  326
    Brian replied

    I see, so it must be some sort of issue with the logic in the theme file then, I'll take a look at it.

  • Salih replied

    Hey Brian,

    Messed around with this a little more. Using a front end post creator means that the video is not displayed unless the right link is used. So for example if I were to share this video I have to use this link:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQWvv-Yx4aE

    Instead of this link:

    http://youtu.be/NeCK823BArc

    Also discovered that the featured video will not show unless the content bar is enabled.

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Actually yes, if you check the info tip for the featured video (on the back-end) you'll see it instructs that you have to use the first link format. That goes for any featured video. So if you disable the content bar and you have a post where you use the correct link format as well as having a featured video and image, the featured video does not display? And then when you simply enable the content bar that causes the video to immediately display?

  • Salih replied

    That's correct Brian, the content bar was the root of all my demise. One question is there anyway to control the player. The height is a little weird and I'm getting letterboxing on all videos, also how do I enable fullscreen mode in the bottom of the youtube controls, at the moment it's impossible to make it full screen,

    Thanks, glad I could finally narrow down the issue here. I tried absolutely everything.

  •  326
    Brian replied

    Do you see any of the youtube controls at all and just not the fullscreen button, or no youtube controls at all? Can I see a direct URL to a video in question?
